Kollontai, an active socialist and fighter for women's rights since 1899, was at first independent of the factions, then became a Menshevik for several years. She joined the Bolsheviks in 1915 and became the only woman member of their central committee. The leading Bolshevik feminist, Aleksandra Kollontai, blamed the family for the enslavement of women and denounced it as a bourgeois institution.

She became arguably the most influential female in the new Soviet society. Born Alexandra Domontovich in 1872, her father was a former tsarist general, her mother the daughter of a minor nobleman. Aleksandra Mikhaylovna Kollontai was a Russian revolutionary, feminist and the first Soviet female diplomat. Early years.
